Dandruff vs. Product Buildup: How to Tell the Difference

Flakes are annoying. But before we can solve the problem, we have to determine what you’re dealing with—dandruff or product buildup. There are specific treatments for each of them to get you back to flake-free hair.

While flakes look similar, there are a few subtleties that can help you distinguish between them:

Shape of flakes

Take a closer look. Are the flakes you see on your scalp all the same size? If so, that’s a good sign it may be buildup. If upon closer inspection, you discover that the particles vary in size or have an irregular shape, it’s most likely dandruff.

Color of flakes

Most people are more familiar with white, or dry, dandruff. Oily dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis, tends to have a yellowish tinge. If your flakes are yellowish in tone, you can probably rule out buildup as the culprit.

While harmless, seborrheic dermatitis is a more serious source of dandruff, so be sure to get a proper diagnosis to understand how to best treat it.

Texture of flakes

If you run your fingers through a few strands of hair to the tips, how do they feel? If they feel a bit greasy, buildup may be present and still clinging to your hair. If your hair feels clean and smooth, but there are still flakes on top, it’s most likely dandruff.

If you still can’t tell the difference, take this quick test: Shake your hair. If you witness the snow globe effect and see flakes floating around, it’s dandruff. Product buildup specs are clingy, so they will mostly remain in your hair even after a vigorous shake.

Now that we’ve detected it, let’s find a solution!

How to deal with dandruff or buildup

Dandruff on scalp

Half the population lives with dandruff. Because of this, there are a variety of ways you can find relief and reduce unwanted flaking in a way that works for you. You can start by finding a shampoo and conditioner that contain zinc pyrithione (ZPT)—an active ingredient that works against dandruff. We recommend Head & Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo for up to 100% flake protection* without drying out your hair, and with an amazing scent. *visible flakes; with regular use

Product buildup on scalp

Hair products can build up on the scalp along with dirt and oil. But before you throw away your favorite styling products, check out the ingredients. Products containing too much silicone can’t be broken down by water alone, which is how they build up on the scalp in the first instance. Try switching to a silicone-free alternative or better yet, using a clarifying shampoo to get a deeper clean if you want to avoid discontinuing your favorite styling products. Our’s embraces both goals; it cleanses and clarifies the scalp and hair, leaving them refreshed and vibrant-looking—even if you don’t have dandruff!
