Discover the causes of scalp psoriasis, a relatively uncommon disease
Psoriasis can affect any part of the skin. When it appears on the scalp, it is called scalp psoriasis. But wherever it manifests, the cause is always the same.
It occurs when the immune system improperly orders the body to fight an infection (even though there isn't one).
This causes inflammatory chemicals to be released as part of the immune response, causing skin cells to reproduce at a faster rate than normal.
Normally, skin cells in people without psoriasis renew every 21 to 28 days. It is a natural process, which cannot be perceived with the naked eye.
But if you have psoriasis, your cells could reproduce at up to ten times the speed, causing excess cells to form plaques on the skin's surface.
Why do psoriasis flare-ups occur? Although there is a lot of information about the immune response that causes psoriasis, the triggers that cause the immune system to respond in that way in people who have the disease are less known.
Although psoriasis has no cure, some people have flare-ups of the disease and sometimes enter long periods of remission before the disease reappears.
Factors such as stress, skin injuries, and hormonal changes can worsen psoriasis and are proven to cause flare-ups of the disease in people who suffer from it.
