Dandruff and acne have different causes, but many people experience them at the same time, usually during puberty.
That’s because both appear due to hormonal changes that cause the body to produce more oil.
In the case of dandruff, a natural microbe called Malassezia globosa takes that oil, called sebum, and breaks it down. About 50% of people get dandruff from this because they are sensitive to the oleic acid produced in the process.
Acne, on the other hand, occurs when increased oil production plus impurities on the face block skin pores. This can cause bacteria that normally live on the skin to infect the blocked pores and produce the symptoms we know as acne.
Therefore, although dandruff and acne have different causes, both arise from oil production. For this reason, in many people acne and dandruff appear at the same time: both can be related to hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty, which cause oil production to increase.
