Head and Shoulders

Think you might have dandruff? What signs should you look for? Check out our guide.

The symptom everyone knows: visible flakes

Flakes are the most obvious sign of dandruff. You can see them on your scalp and hair, as well as on your shoulders.

Dandruff flakes can be small and white, or large and yellowish in more severe cases. They form when your skin cells renew faster than normal, and the excess dead cells then form the visible flakes.

A red, irritated scalp

You might also notice redness on your scalp, where the skin is irritated and inflamed.

This is caused by the scalp’s reaction to substances produced by the malassezia globosa microbe. Some people are more sensitive to these irritants than others.

An itchy head can be linked to dandruff

A scalp irritated by dandruff can be very itchy... but don't scratch! Giving in to the temptation risks worsening the problem and causing further damage to the surface cells of the scalp.

Dry scalp and a tight feeling

Dandruff can cause a dry scalp because it disrupts the skin's natural moisture barrier. This is similar to dry skin you might experience on other parts of your body, sometimes with a tight feeling.

If you experience all or even just one of these symptoms, you may have dandruff.

Use Head & Shoulders Classic Clean shampoo to quickly treat all dandruff symptoms.

The unique zinc pyrithione formula treats the root cause of dandruff, by soothing irritation and leaving the scalp healthy and flake-free¹.
