Discover the causes of oily hair, and how to quickly and simply remedy the problem, with our expert tips and advice.
What is oily hair? What we call oily hair is often just the appearance they have when the natural lipid film called sebum visibly coats them.
Everyone is affected, although some people produce more sebum, which makes their hair appear more "greasy" at first glance.
Sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands and its primary role is to moisturize the hair and scalp to keep them healthy.
The areas richest in sebaceous glands are the face, décolleté, and scalp. In fact, each square centimeter of your scalp contains 200 to 500 of them.
Scientists believe that this natural lipid film protects the epidermis, and some have hypothesized that it served our distant ancestors to recognize each other by smell.
Scalp problems can arise when this sebum, continuously produced by the body, traps dust and pollution on the scalp and hair, which then become dull.
How to solve an oily hair problem Since oily hair is not a disease, there is no "cure". You cannot stop sebum production. However, you can regulate it by regularly using a shampoo with intense cleansing active ingredients.
You should wash your hair at least three times a week to remove excess sebum.
And even more often than that in summer or when the weather is particularly humid, as sebum tends to spread under the effect of heat and perspiration, making your hair even oilier.
