PUBERTY AND DANDRUFF: WHY TEENAGERS ARE PRONE TO DANDRUFF

Head and Shoulders

Teenage years can be tough; you don’t need the added stress of dandruff. But why are teens prone to dandruff and what can you do?

PUBERTY AND DANDRUFF: WHY TEENAGERS ARE PRONE TO DANDRUFF

Dandruff is caused by a naturally occurring microbe, malassezia globosa, which breaks down the oils on your scalp into other substances.

Some people are sensitive to these substances and their skin’s reaction is to hyper-proliferate, i.e., to produce new cells at an accelerated rate.

This is what causes dandruff: an excess of dead skin cells build up on the scalp and hair, often falling onto the shoulders.

So, why are teens particularly susceptible?

Voice breaking, acne, dandruff… these are all connected to a surge in hormones.

Hormones are responsible for all the changes your body goes through. During our teenage years, hormone levels are high, which contributes to increased oil production.

On the scalp, oil is broken down into potentially irritating substances. So, more oil = more irritation.

How long will I have dandruff?

This could be the start of a prolonged dandruff problem, or simply a phase triggered by the temporary shift in your hormone and oil levels. It really depends on each person, with some being much more prone than others.

It’s not a condition that can be cured, but dandruff can be easily and effectively controlled with the right products.

Head & Shoulders shampoos and 2-in-1s wash away visible flakes and leave your hair looking great. So use it every time you wash your hair and you won’t have to worry about dandruff on your shoulders, or any damage to your hair and scalp from dandruff.
