How dandruff starts
A naturally occurring microbe on the scalp feeds on natural oils called sebum
This process produces oleic acid
If you are sensitive to oleic acid, your body will react by displaying symptoms of dandruff
Your hormones control oil production
Hormones are a key part of producing the natural oils you need for dandruff to start. They’re totally normal and are essential to keepyour hair and scalp moisturized.
But when you’re sensitive to oleic acid, sebum production can lead to dandruff. For some, dandruff can appear at times when hormones change, notably during puberty when you begin producing more oils than usual.

But remember, dandruff is not caused by hormones alone. You still need to be sensitive to oleic acid – and there’s a good chance you are, because it affects 50% of the world’s population.
