THE SCIENCE OF YOUR SCALP

HOW TO USE HAIR STYLING CREAM

Want to know how to get strong, shiny, healthy hair? Easy! It all starts with your scalp. Seriously, shift the love and attention you give your troubled hair a little higher.

Many people focus their time and effort on the hair they see, hoping to repair damage or infuse a little life into an otherwise dull and flat mane. Yes, it helps, but that’s not where you should be focusing all the love.

Your scalp is where the magic happens.

It’s literally the birthplace of strong, shiny, healthy hair. So, it makes sense to care for your scalp the best you can. But how can you care for something you know so little about? Don’t worry, we’re here to help.

What’s a scalp made of?

Your scalp is made up of a combination of things, including skin, oil and hair. But did you know it has its own environment? Yep! And understanding this environment will bring you one big step closer to the healthy hair you want.

Let’s take a closer look:

  • The skin. The outermost layer of your skin is called the stratum corneum. The cells you see actually start out deeper beneath the surface in the epidermis (outer layer), and gradually change as they move toward the surface - morphing into a flatter shape that makes a good barrier to keep moisture inside and irritants outside. The skin cells you shed daily are constantly being replaced by this process. It takes about 1 month for a brand-new skin cell to complete this cycle.

  • Sebum. Sebum is the collective term for the scalp oils made by the sebaceous glands on your head.

  • Hair. The environment your hair creates is one of the main reasons your scalp skin needs a different care routine than the skin on your face. Your hair follicles create a darker, warmer and more humid environment for the scalp, which is why it needs special care and attention to stay healthy.

  • Microbiome. A microbiome is a community of microorganisms living together in a habitat – in this case, the top of your head. These microorganisms are completely normal, and everyone has them. The important thing is to make sure to maintain its healthy balance.

How to care for your scalp’s environment

Just like the skin on your face, your scalp skin needs to be looked after. It’s easy for it to get out of balance, and when it’s out of balance, you experience the signs like itching, irritation, flakes.

The good news is, you can start on the road to healthy hair now! If you get it right, the result is strong, shiny, healthy hair.
