If you don't remove excess styling products from your hair, they can break down and irritate the scalp. Find out more about product build-up and how styling products can irritate sensitive scalps.
Practically all styling products can irritate sensitive scalps – it all depends on which ingredients you’re sensitive to.
It’s often a case of trial and error. You’ll never be certain how a particular product is going to affect your scalp, so you might need to try a few different things to discover what’s best for you.
The problem of build-up Styling products build up over time, trapping oil, dirt and other substances close to the skin. These will break down over time, and when they do, new substances will be formed that can irritate a sensitive scalp.
Even if you’re not sensitive to the styling product itself, in between washes, it could start to cause irritation, redness and itching.
How to avoid product build-up If you use styling products, be sure to wash your hair regularly. Apply shampoo directly to the scalp, rather than just the hair, and massage it in well for 30 seconds.
You can also use a deep cleaning or purifying shampoo once a week to give it a good clean and make sure as much product as possible is removed.
