It’s winter, but your scalp is reminding you of a dried-up desert landscape. Ironic, isn’t it? Winter is actually one of the riskiest times for scalp dryness. We’ll explain why.
As winter arrives, several factors can upset your scalp. If you have dandruff, you might experience a significant flare-up in winter.
Turned on the heating? Beware...
In winter, you probably spend most of your time indoors, with central or electric heating systems.
This heat tends to be very dry. Your skin, including your scalp, can therefore start to dry out and become much drier than usual.
This lack of moisture can make your scalp feel tight, just like the skin on your hands and face. And just as you moisturize those, you need to moisturize your scalp.
Don’t overuse the hairdryer
Hairdryers are very useful in winter, as we are often told not to go out into the cold with wet hair, and hair doesn't air-dry as easily in winter.
But be careful: using a hairdryer exposes your hair to intense heat that can dry out your scalp, thus reinforcing that feeling of tightness and dryness.
The same goes for hot showers. You might enjoy this luxury on a cold day, but very hot water can damage the scalp and strip it of its moisture.
Should I turn off the heating and take cold showers? What a torment!
No. Just be careful. For example, try not to use the hottest temperature setting on your hairdryer and use water at a temperature just above your body temperature, about 38 °C.
The heating will be on and even if it’s set to a low temperature, you’ll still need your hairdryer.
In winter, the best thing you can do for your scalp is to give it the extra moisture it needs to prevent dryness from becoming a significant problem.
