HAIRSTYLING PRODUCTS AND SENSITIVE SCALP

Head and Shoulders

If you don't remove excess styling product from your hair, it can break down and irritate your scalp. Learn more about product buildup and how styling products can irritate a sensitive scalp.

Any styling product can irritate a sensitive scalp; it all depends on the ingredients you are sensitive to.

It often takes trial and error. It's difficult to know which products will affect your scalp, so you'll need to test several to discover what works best for you.

The Problem with Buildup

Styling products accumulate over time, trapping oils, impurities, and other substances against your skin. These break down over time, forming new substances that can irritate a sensitive scalp.

So, even if you aren't sensitive to the styling product itself, it can start causing irritation, redness, and itching between washes.

How to Avoid Product Buildup

If you use styling products, make sure to remove them regularly by washing your hair. Apply shampoo directly to the scalp, rather than the hair, and lather well for about 30 seconds.

You can also use a purifying or clarifying shampoo once a week to deeply cleanse your hair and rid your scalp of as much product as possible.
