WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF WATER TEMPERATURE ON HAIR AND SCALP?

Head and Shoulders

If your shower water is too hot, you risk damaging your scalp. If it's too cold, it won't clean your hair well. Discover the ideal temperature for a good clean and to protect your scalp.

First, consider what water does:

  • it helps shampoo lather and spread across the scalp;
  • it dissolves dirt and grease;
  • it rinses away shampoo, dirt, dust and flakes from hair and scalp.

Hot enough to clean well...

Hot water starts to melt the waxy, semi-solid grease on your hair. This grease is liquid at body temperature but solidifies on cooler hair surfaces.

Hot water helps your shampoo more easily remove the grease, dirt and dust that build up and soil the scalp.

But not TOO hot...

However, don't risk turning up the temperature too high: water that’s too hot can irritate, or even damage, your scalp.

With excessive exposure, your weakened scalp can become vulnerable to other irritants, such as styling products or the microbes that cause dandruff.

So, how hot should it be?

You need a temperature that's high enough to thoroughly clean grease and dirt, but not too hot to avoid irritation.

A temperature just above body temperature is ideal, around 38°C.

This is the ideal balance to keep your hair clean and healthy and to protect your scalp from irritation.
