Find how we’re reducing the impact of our manufacturing process and see the progress we’ve made so far.

We’re working hard to address those aspects of our manufacturing process that impact the environment, including:

  • Energy consumption – Everything from turning on the lights to running the machinery requires energy.

  • Water use – Water is used in cooling and in stages of the manufacturing, as well as being a key ingredient in the shampoo.

  • CO2 emissions – Everything from transporting the raw materials to the making of the product can create emissions.

  • Manufacturing waste – All manufacturing processes produce waste. We want to reduce that and make sure we put waste to good use through recycling.

What we’ve achieved so far

Here’s what Head & Shoulders has achieved between 2010 and 2015:

  • 7 percent reduction in energy consumption

  • 11 percent reduction in water consumption

  • 85 percent reduction in manufacturing waste

  • 11 percent cut in CO2 emissions

Turning waste into useful products

Our goal is to send nothing to landfill, so that means finding innovative new ways of recycling and reusing the waste generated in the production process.

Today, seven of our manufacturing plants are operating at zero manufacturing waste to landfill.

Instead of sending it to landfill, we’re using our waste for good. We’re turning waste bottles into other plastic items, like furniture and flowerpots.

Using renewable energy
Another key part of our plan to reduce our carbon emissions is a focus on renewable energy. And we’re making good progress:

  • Taicang, China – Our manufacturing plant uses 100 percent renewable electricity from wind to produce H&S.

  • Xiqing, China – More than 15 percent of the plant’s energy needs are now provided by on-site geothermal energy.
